Asian Beach Ultimate Championship 2008 (Singapore)

Asian Beach Ultimate Championship 2008 (Singapore)

What can you expect when the beach frisbee maniacs get together over the weekend? ONE awesome weekend with lots of disc flying.

6 teams from asia came down to sentosa for the Asian Beach Ultimate  Frisbee Championship. Boracay Dragon (Philipines), Goa (India), Freakshow (Singapore), BUMS (Singapore) and Loosing Daylight (All Stars).

The tournament, organized by Singapore Frisbeesports (SFS) and   supported by Singapore Sports  council (SSC) Waterfest 2008 and  Sentosa Leisure Group wasn't the first to happen on Siloso Beach,  Sentosa. Over the past years, it was just the local teams playing  against each other. Just to spice things up a little, SFS invited  Philippines' Boracay Dragon. Hopefully, this wouldn't  be Boracay Dragon's first and last Beach Ultimate tournament here in  Singapore.

And also for the very first time in Beach Ultimate history, TV crew from ESPN Sports, together with host Jamie Yeo made their appearance at the beach tournament site to get some action over both days. Jamie had a taste of beach frisbee with help from some of the players, Derek  Ramsey (Boracay Dragon) and Serene Ng (Loosing Daylight).

The only Singapore Beach Ultimate Frisbee team - BUMs

In all, this year's beach tournament attracted a total number of 68  players and pretty much more curious crowd on the sidelines. some heard about this tournament over the news radio channel 93.8 and some from  the local channels - Channel 8 and Channel U, where uncle ra and the SFS crew did  a short promo about the tournament a few weeks back.

The first day format were played round-robin style where all  teams played against each other. We heard from one player, Dario  (Freakshow) that  this was a good format because all teams will be able to know their seeding for the entire tournament and how they fared against each other.

On the second day, the format was different from the usual, this was the "double knock-out" style. There are two pools and teams were given two tries. If the team lost in the first pool, they would have another chance in the second pool and would try to climb their way back to take part in the semis, then the finals.

Team Loosing Daylight fought it hard in the semis against Boracay B. There is not one second that players were not running or diving for  the disc. Every point was fought for, tight and hard. It was one of those games where  you did not want it to end.

The final game was between Boracay A and Boracay B. "This is like my dream game to watch!" This comment came from one of the players  at the sidelines. Another  player even had to pinch herself to see if it was for real, "The Dragons are playing in Sentosa?"

What made Uncle Ra bring in the Dragons? "Well, for a  start, building a strong Beach Ultimate competition in Asia, it is   only right that we bring in the world's No. 2. That was definitely the right move."
