Youth Street Ultimate Frisbee Challenge 2008 – 1st Round (29th March)

The day began with a crowd of eager participants and organisers alike swarming the National Library’s foyer at Bras Basah Road. It marked the start of the inaugural Sports On! Youth Street Ultimate Frisbee Challenge 2008 organised by Singapore Frisbeesports (SFS) and supported by the Singapore Sports Council, National Library Board and Ultimate Players Association (Singapore) in a bid to promote Ultimate Frisbee to youths leading up to the Youth Olympics in 2010. This event promised participants a day of fast-paced and adrenaline-pumping indoor street ultimate games with attractive prizes up for grabs.

Ultimate Frisbee is a unique sport where the Spirit of the Game is championed and exemplified by players who officiate the game themselves. Games are fought hard and fairly, bringing out the highest level of sportsmanship in players.

Being a relatively new yet increasingly popular sport, it was an accomplishment for the event to draw a total of 160 participants. The competition saw 20 teams in 3 categories (U16, U19 and Open) vying for the top prize of vouchers and frisbees sponsored by Brewerkz and Singapore Frisbee Sports respectively. Participants had to quickly adapt to the significantly smaller playing fields with fast cuts and excellent team coordination to overcome the space constraints. However, players had one less worry – the wind element – playing in an enclosed area where the event was held.

After hours of physically-demanding gameplay, fast-break offensives and solid defending, Alphe (SHATEC), Tanglin-Cairnhill, Team Rockets (RJC), Imma Hammer You! (RJC), Kranji B and Snickers successfully fought off other opponents to book a place in their respective Division Finals.
Lambent - almost there!
Shuqun Secondary School -semi finalist

Each of the final matches boasted a remarkable level of gameplay since most participants had barely played Ultimate for a few years. With each player giving their all, every match was exhilarating to watch, characterised by pin-point accuracy throws, swift cutting and gravity-defying jumps. Truly an experience that all Ultimate players would enjoy!
