Our Coaches

Uncle Ra
Hi, this is Uncle Ra. I started playing Frisbee on a beautiful beach called Gold Coast, Australia back in the early 90's.

Started to play the game again in 2001 when one of my friends' husband, John Lin, invited me for a weekend 'pick-up' game down at Marina South. In 2003, after much consideration, I decided to promote and educate the game to schools full time. It's been a great experience being in school, day in, day out, watching students transform from newbies who do not know the game of Ultimate Frisbee to become future high-flying Ultimate Frisbee players. To date, I've met and taught about 1000 kids to play Ultimate Frisbee. Of course this would never have happened without the assistance of all the instructors and support crew and I got to admit I am hooked experiencing all these.

My wish for Ultimate Frisbee in Singapore is to see the game in schools grow, and establish successful Inter-School tournaments for Juniors & Youth.

Ms Jo
Known as Ms Jo, a thorough, patient yet stern coach, kids just love her (it might be something to do with her singing).  A double degree holder, Ms Jo is the other half of SFS's brain. She's been around promoting and educating Ultimate Frisbee since January 2006. Her journey to becoming a coach started in Dec 2005 when she bumped into Uncle Ra one night after a pick-up game. Now a full fledged Asst. Coach, Ms Jo holds a SSC NCAP Level 01, IOC Sports Administrator Certificate and hopefully will undergo her Ultimate Frisbee Practical coaching training in Australia this year. Ms Jo is currently coaching Jurong West Secondary School. Practicing what she 'preaches', Ms Jo is a proficient Ultimate player herself. She traveled to the Manila Spirits with local team Shiok & her beach team, One Pint, won both the Surf & Sweat and SMU Waikiki beach frisbee tournament.

Dawn Tay – Senior Instructor
Ex netball player & current Frisbee player, Dawn is both an SFS Instructor & the person behind the scene of SFS Media & Resource Department. An avid lover of beach Ultimate ("sand wins over grass anytime!") she is a member of Beach Ultimate Maniac (BUMS). Part of the Motley Crew that went to Manila Spirits 07.
Favourite quote to errant kids: "Remember, holding the disc is a PRIVILEGE"

Nigel Lim Senior Instructor
The second youngest SFS Ultimate Frisbee coach, Nigel's been around schools since 2004, following Uncle Ra in promoting and educating Ultimate Frisbee. Having started playing the sport only when he was 15 years young, he's one of the best young players in Singapore. Skillful and speedy, he reads the game well and is dangerous in the endzone. Not forgetting his forehand "banana" throws. Currently studying sports science in Republic Polytechnic, Nigel also plays in one of Singapore's premier club - SHIOK.

Q: Describe your scariest encounter on the field?
A: On a rainy afternoon, as I was warming up and waiting for my game to start, I saw someone's handphone floating away.

Q: What do u like about ultimate?
A: Can see many many pretty girls.. and I mean MANY!!!

Q: What unconventional thing do you do with a disc?
A: I used the disc as a plate to put fruits during the Singapore Open's. since the fruits were free, I just help myself with more. FREE wat.. who don want. All Singaporean so KIASU & I still growing lor. So must eat more.

Jonathan Sng – The nice guy
Just turning 19 this year, Jon is one of our youngest instructors. Don’t be fooled by his age, this   young man is a dedicated Coach-to-be, already enrolled into Sports Management courses.
Having started out when he was 17, Jon had been teaching in school for 2 years. Those who
have been taught by him are be convinced of his gentleness and sincere way of approaching each and every student. Hardworking and driven, he seeks to improve himself as an instructor constantly.
So Jon..:

Why do you like Ultimate?
    * I love to run.. and I can meet new friends overseas as i play in tournaments

* I am also getting more experience, playing different games..
    * I love the intensity!

What unconventional things can you do with a disc?
*Laughs Out Loud* ...I never really do stuff with a disc other than throwing it around, but I do use it as a coaster to put my cold drinks in front of the computer, oh and I also use it as a tray in school like when I buy packet food =p haha

Which Ultimate Frisbee club are you playing with now?

Lewis Sim - Trainee Instructor
Lewis Sim, 23, is one of SFS’s up-&-coming Trainee Instructors. Working on getting his full-fledged SFS Instructor credentials, Lewis has been coaching kids mainly in St Hilda’s Primary. For those who are interested, as well as a Ultimate coach-to-be & player, Lewis is also an accomplished lifeguard!

And..Who are you?
Lewis Sim, I’ve been playing Frisbee for a year or so. Used to play for Beach Ultimate Maniacs (BUMs) but unable to commit due to injury & other commitments. Most probably playing with team from SIM in future.

Why Ultimate for you, Lewis?
I used to play baseball/softball for school and club. Ultimate Frisbee is somewhat like baseball where you’d have to dive for the ball/disc and run/jump. Helps to keep fit too!

Why coach/ What makes coaching special for you?
Being a coach enables me to learn interaction skills and patience with children. I’m able to learn many life skills from coaching and probably networking too.

Describe 1 memorable coaching experience
Every coaching day is a new experience- just the overall satisfaction when I can see how the kids grow from some one who doesn’t know how throw a Frisbee to someone who can and have the desire to play Ultimate Frisbee eventually.

Grass & Mud? Or Sand & Sea?
Well, I started out at the beach ever since, practiced once at NUS field. In the end, sand is still better because when you layout, the sand can cushion your impact and hitting off the sand it can easily come out. As for the field, the mud just stains everything!

Lewis, we'd REALLY like to know what's your secret in being so popular with the kids??? (for those who don't know, Lewis is constantly being followed around by students in schools, mostly girls! )Also, just to clear the confusion: What would you prefer the kids to call you by? I.e Uncle Lewis, Coach, Sir….etcetc
There ain’t no secrets, just probably be friendlier to the kids and they will like you. About that part where girls following me around, I must emphasize, both girls and guys follow me around too! (uhoh..) Given my age, I guess best to call ‘coach Lewis’ because ‘uncle Lewis’ sounds old. If Ra is ‘uncle’ and they also call me ‘uncle then’ what makes my age?
